Profile: Paul Daniells

As the founder of Paul Daniells & Associates, Paul’s goal has always been to educate and assist, as much as building a globally recognized Business Intelligence consultancy practice. This can be seen throughout the PaulDaniells.com website, where vendor-neutral informational resources and snippets of applications are frequently updated and are freely available to view, download and use. After more than 25 years in the IT industry, Paul felt it was time to give back a little something to a profession that has given him the opportunity to travel worldwide and work with a diverse and talented number of individuals. The website itself is a constant work-in-progress.

Not being aligned to any specific vendor is a key mantra within the Paul Daniells & Associates organization. This objectivity enables the right decision to be made that fits a specific set of customer circumstances.

How it all started

Paul’s interest in IT started in England, and at about 15 years old first becoming fascinated by an Apple II and programming a game from a magazine article. Once his local school had a computer, his interest grew, and he changed from his planned career in electronics to take a degree in Computer Science at the University of London. Little did he realize that his choice of campus – Queen Mary College in the east end of London – would be significant as QMC was a leading light in the UK in terms of UNIX & distributed processing (under Professor George Coulouris) and computer graphics workstations. He also learnt a lot from Professor Peter Landin, who taught programming without using a computer language – challenging at the time, but an invaluable skill for the future.

Experience

Paul’s broad experience of the application of IT to industry covers the whole spectrum from mainframe solutions to stand-alone PC based applications, and everything in between including UNIX, AS400 and specialist fault-tolerant systems. Even before the term Business Intelligence or Data Warehousing was popularized, Paul worked on systems with a data acquisition, analysis & reporting focus (often referred to as MIS Management Information Systems). Paul has also extensive experience of various OLTP (On-Line Transaction Processing) applications, as a developer, database designer, DBA, system administrator, project manager and IT director.

In terms of industry sectors, Paul has worked on IT systems for Insurance, Banking, Medical, CRM (Customer Relationship Management), Transportation, Manufacturing, Retail, Construction, Telecommunications and the Entertainment industry.
